I was born into a family where my siblings were HIV-negative, and I was the only one who was HIV-positive. This made me feel different and isolated. The discrimination and stigma I faced were overwhelming, and I often felt alone in my struggle. My emotional battles led to poor adherence to my medication, and I felt as though I was fighting this battle by myself. Everything changed when I met a YAPS (Young Adolescent Peer Supporter) at my healthcare facility. This individual shared their experiences and showed me how to live positively despite the challenges. Their stories were full of hope, and for the first time, I realized that I wasn’t alone. I found the strength to embrace my status and take control of my health.
Encouraged by this newfound confidence, I participated in the Y+ Pageant. I saw it as a platform to advocate for young people living with HIV and to foster a sense of solidarity among us. It was an opportunity to show the world that HIV doesn’t define us, and that we are capable of living fabulous lives full of purpose, love, and hope.
Being part of the Y+ Pageant has been a transformative experience. It has given me the confidence to share my journey openly and encourage struggling others. Through this journey, I’ve discovered that the power to change lives lies in the strength of our voices and in supporting one another.
Today, life is fabulous. I stand tall and proud of who I am and no longer let stigma control my narrative. Joining the pageant and sharing my story has opened doors for me, and I’ve learned that our vulnerability can become our greatest strength.
My journey reminds me that no matter where we come from, we all have the power to overcome and thrive. I hope my story inspires young people living with HIV to embrace their journey with confidence. You are not alone, and together, we can break down the barriers of stigma and discrimination. Let’s stand strong, support each other, and live life to the fullest.
